Stacks Diner

Dark, cozy diner with leather benches serving refined American comfort food. The best seats are at the bar, watching the open kitchen send out fried chicken biscuits and hashbrowns with roe.

I’m a regular at neighborhood record shops and spend too much time debating the best fries in town. Always up for a night of live music or a spontaneous canal-side hangout.

The center of Stacks Diner is its open kitchen, fronted by a long titanium bar lined with stainless steel stools. From one of those stools, you have a direct view of the chefs at work. The rest of the room follows a modern diner aesthetic – dark colors, deep leather benches, and Art Deco lamps that give the space a warm, vibrant feel. Soft R&B plays, and the walls are decorated with paintings by artist Ralph Goings. This whole setup is the vision of its New Yorker owner, who reinterprets American comfort food using ingredients sourced from Central and Northern Europe. The focus is on homestyle cooking, particularly from the southernmost states, with a clear commitment to making everything from scratch. House-made breads are the foundation of the menu, with biscuits, cornbread, and potato bread appearing throughout. The Fried Chicken Biscuit is a fixture, as are the classic biscuits and gravy. Look for specific dishes like the hashbrown topped with sour cream and roe, or the well-executed chilaquiles. Sides like creamy cheese grits and creamed spinach round things out. While brunch is popular, the menu extends to dinner with mains like a dry-aged steak with chimichurri. The bar also turns out classic cocktails – Negronis, Old Fashioneds, Margaritas – and serves a tight list of beer and wine. Desserts stick to American classics, including seasonal pies like Key Lime or Atlantic Beach Pie and a proper Hot Fudge Sundae. The diner operates mostly on a walk-in basis, and the seats at the bar are the ones to get. On the street, a modest two-table terrace sits under a dark green awning. And just three doors down, a separate Stacks Deli sells the diner’s popular sauces, sandwiches, and fresh baked goods to take away.
