The Greek Theatre

Greek Theatre is an outdoor amphitheater on the University of California, Berkeley campus. Officially known as the William Randolph Hearst Greek Theatre, it was designed by John Galen Howard and completed in 1903. The venue is named after newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, who funded its construction. Greek Theatre is modeled after ancient Greek amphitheaters, particularly the Epidaurus. It features a classical façade with a colonnade and a large stage area. The theater has a seating capacity of approximately 8,500 and offers unobstructed views from any location within the venue. The amphitheater is primarily used for performing arts, hosting events including concerts, theatrical performances, and university ceremonies. It is also a popular venue for graduation ceremonies for UC Berkeley students. The venue provides a scenic backdrop for events, being surrounded by trees and offering views of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge on clear days. Public transportation is available via Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and bus services. Parking is limited in the area, and attendees are encouraged to use public transport or ride-sharing services. Most events are scheduled between April and October when the weather is best. There are concession stands throughout the venue providing refreshments and merch. Restroom facilities are available on-site. Plus, the amphitheater is ADA-compliant, with accessible seating and amenities for individuals with disabilities.
