Flowerland has held its spot on Solano Avenue for over 75 years, but the first thing you'll notice is the old marquee sign out front, usually displaying a plant-related pun. The 12,000-square-foot property is less a traditional nursery and more a sprawling garden you can walk through, with pathways and nooks defined by arbors, salvaged wood, and vintage benches. It’s a space built for lingering. Near the entrance, a refurbished 1969 Streamline Princess trailer houses a satellite location for a local coffee shop. Grabbing a coffee and then wandering the grounds is a common way to start a visit here, and the whole place is dog-friendly. The plant selection itself has evolved over the decades, shifting from basics to a more curated collection focused on California natives, perennials, succulents, and edible plants, all chosen to support biodiversity and water conservation. Inside the main building, a gift shop is set up with old country-store-style shelving. The space is filled with house-made terrariums, botanical-inspired jewelry, seed packets, and a selection of locally made goods like marmalades and olive oil – you can even bring your bottle for a refill. The staff, some with formal horticulture training, are a key part of the experience and can guide you through the extensive pottery and high-end garden tool sections. Seasonal displays are a major draw, especially the organic and sustainably sourced Christmas trees and wreaths that appear in the winter.
