Two friends from the neighborhood took over the former Kartenspiel International pub and stripped it back to create something distinctly moody. The result is Basalt, a bar that feels less like a traditional Wedding kneipe and more like a nocturnal greenhouse. The interior design leans heavily into a dark, botanical theme – green-tinted tiles line the walls and plants trail from the ceiling, creating a dense, enclosed atmosphere that suits the evening hours.
The space is defined by a careful repetition of materials. If you look closely, you’ll see the cast concrete of the floor echoed on the tabletops and windowsills, while the metal cladding on the tables mirrors the flooring behind the bar. Matthias, one of the co-founders, developed this visual concept, while Kieran manages the beverage program. The drinks align with the room’s aesthetic, focusing on a seasonal rotation of cocktails that often incorporate herbal or botanical elements alongside standard classics.
It is a busy room, especially on weekends. The tables fill up quickly, so arriving early is usually necessary if you want to avoid standing or waiting for a spot to open up. A separate, enclosed smoking room keeps the air in the main bar clear – a functional detail that makes a significant difference when the crowd swells. Service includes free water, a small but welcome touch in a city where that isn't always standard. In the warmer months, tables appear on the sidewalk, but the distinct character of the place is firmly rooted inside among the vines and tiles.
