For nearly thirty years, Jeffrey Thompson has run this kitchen on a strict rule against canned goods – barring olive oil – despite the straightforward, strip-mall setting. The result is a venue that operates somewhere between a neighborhood diner and a chef-driven kitchen, serving Carmel Valley locals who are willing to overlook the decor for the food. Inside, the dining room holds onto a distinct 1980s aesthetic, clean but undeniably dated. It is a space that fills up fast, often feeling cramped once the weekend breakfast crowd descends. If the room gets too tight, the spillover moves to a heated, pet-friendly patio that offers a bit more breathing room. The menu is vast, leaning heavily into what Thompson calls "American eclectic" comfort food. Eggs Benedict is the primary engine here, with variations ranging from the standard grilled ham to smoked salmon with dill hollandaise, wild mushroom, or even calamari steak. The kitchen doesn’t shy away from richness; plates often arrive buried under sauce, so it’s not uncommon to see regulars asking for the hollandaise on the side. Sweet options are treated with equal weight. House-made apple fritters are a fixture, served alongside sausage links with warm maple syrup poured from a thermal mug – a practical touch that keeps the sugar hot throughout the meal. Later in the day, the focus shifts to the mesquite grill, where the scent of wood smoke signals orders of burgers, chicken sandwiches, and New York steaks. It is a daytime-only operation, closed Mondays, and the parking lot usually jams up long before noon.
