My days usually start with a pastel de nata and a walk up too many hills.
Bar Alimentar is built on a simple idea: applying an Italian sensibility to Portuguese ingredients. The concept comes from chef João Magalhães Correia, who spent eight years in Italy, and it’s a collaboration with the team from the Lisbon cocktail bar Imprensa. Located in the Mercês neighborhood, the restaurant has a small patio space out front, but the real atmosphere is inside. The room is intimate and cozy, softly lit by candles with wine bottles lining the walls. Its layout is neatly divided – one half has traditional tables for small groups, while the other is dedicated to counter seating around a central bar. This split gives you a choice between a more conventional dinner setup or a spot right in the middle of the action. The menu is a focused collection of creative small plates designed for sharing. While it changes periodically, you can expect dishes that blend techniques and flavors from both countries, like whipped codfish cannoli, crispy polenta often served with beef tartare, or pastas such as goat cheese ravioli. The whole experience is built around ordering several plates for the table and working your way through them. Drinks are a core part of the experience here. The cocktail program, developed by the Imprensa team, is excellent, with original creations sometimes playfully named after Italian football players. There is also a well-curated wine list to match the food. Because the restaurant is small and consistently popular, booking ahead is essential, especially on weekends when it’s almost always full.
