Thenga Cafe

Canteen-style cafe inside the Central YMCA serving home-cooked, vegan Bengali food. The daily-changing menu always centers on the thali – a selection of curries and sides served on a metal tray.

Football on Saturdays, market stalls on Sundays. I know exactly how to time the Tube rush.

You won’t find Thenga Cafe from the street – its entrance is tucked inside the Central YMCA building on Cromer Street, just past the main reception desk. Once you’re in, the space opens up into a large dining area with high ceilings and a simple, no-frills layout that feels more like a school canteen than a typical cafe. It’s a functional setup where meals are served on classic metal trays, reinforcing the casual, community-focused atmosphere. The women's bathroom even has a distinct design, a surprising purple and blue portal that stands out from the otherwise straightforward decor. The menu is entirely vegan and changes daily, built around the home-style Bengali cooking of head chef Nippa, who also brings 17 years of experience from Italy to the kitchen. This background informs a menu that feels both traditional and unique. The main event is the daily Indian thali – a generous platter of different curries and sides served with rice or lentils. You can also usually find things like dosa wraps, stuffed parathas, and fresh pakoras or samosas available at the counter. Alongside the main dishes, there’s homemade masala chai, fresh juices, and coffee made with an Italian Fairtrade blend. A small selection of daily cakes and energy balls is also available. The whole operation is geared toward daytime service, making it a reliable spot for a solo lunch, and it's pet-friendly, so don't be surprised to see a dog resting under a table. Just be mindful of the hours, as the cafe generally closes by 6 pm on weekdays and is shut entirely on Sundays.
