Football on Saturdays, market stalls on Sundays. I know exactly how to time the Tube rush.

Set back from the main bustle of Portobello Road, Portobello Garden Caffe – also known as Saporitalia – is a straightforward Neapolitan spot operating right in the middle of the market. The restaurant has been here since 2011, serving as a reliable escape from the surrounding chaos with a clear focus on simple, fresh Southern Italian food. The space itself is small and unassuming, designed to feel like a traditional Italian kitchen. You’ll find a large street scene mural painted on one wall, a simple buffet table, and fresh ingredients like tomatoes and herbs often used as part of the decor. A large wood-fired pizza oven sits in full view, and it’s the clear center of gravity for the whole operation. The pizzas that come out of it are a major draw, but the menu covers the full range of regional cooking. Expect to find traditional courses of antipasti, pasta, meat, and fish. The kitchen puts out platters of cured ham, miniature bruschetti, and daily vegetable dishes alongside pastas like gnocchi in tomato sauce with mozzarella or paccheri with veal meatballs. Everything is rooted in the simple, ingredient-focused traditions of Naples and the Sorrento area. Most people find their way here as a break from shopping at the market, making it a functional and popular stop. Because of its location, the restaurant gets swept up in the market’s weekend crowds. It’s worth trying to get a table before 5 p.m., especially on a Saturday, if you want to avoid the biggest rush.
