Tacos La Carreta

Vibrant, no-frills taqueria that started as a food truck, built on the strength of its griddled mulitas. Orders come up fast, with a small self-serve bar for adding fresh salsas and beans.

My weekends are split between beach runs and taco trucks.

Tacos La Carreta built its reputation from a food truck, largely on the strength of its mulitas, before settling into this permanent taqueria on the corner of East Vernon and Compton Avenue. The building is a simple, vibrant spot with its own dedicated parking lot – a straightforward setup for a quick meal. Inside, the space is no-frills and functional, with an atmosphere that can get lively, sometimes with a man playing an accordion in the corner. The whole operation is counter-service. You place your order, then find a table. While the mulitas are the original draw, the menu covers the full range of taqueria classics, all built on freshly made tortillas. The taco list is extensive, running through standards like asada, carnitas, and al pastor, but also including harder-to-find cuts like lengua, tripa, and buche. Burritos come packed with a choice of meat plus beans, rice, lettuce, tomato, cilantro, onion, cheese, and crema. You'll also find tortas, quesadillas, carne asada plates, and menudo on the board. Once you have your food, a small, self-serve bar is set up with a selection of salsas and a pot of beans for you to add yourself. To drink, there are classic aguas frescas and champurrado, and the kitchen also makes its own flan for dessert.
