Olympia Coffee House

Bustling, century-old Irani cafe where service is fast and the tables turn quickly. Mornings are for mutton kheema pav and sweet chai; evenings center on rich masala fries and the signature caramel custard.

Housed in a building called Rahim Mansion 1 since 1918, Olympia Coffee House is a fixture in Colaba that has remained largely unchanged while the neighborhood evolved around it. The exterior is unassuming, but inside, the space holds onto its original character with dark wooden counters, panelled walls, and simple marble-topped tables. It’s a two-level space, and the main point of difference is functional – the upper floor has air conditioning. The atmosphere is always busy and straightforward, built around brisk service rather than leisurely dining. The menu is a direct and celebrated list of non-vegetarian Mughlai and Irani classics. Breakfast is a serious affair, starting at 7 a.m. with signature dishes like Mutton Kheema Pav and Paya, alongside various masala omelettes. Later in the day, the focus shifts to heartier meals. The Mutton Masala Fry, Chicken Masala Fry, and Bheja Masala Fry are staples, served quickly and without fuss. You’ll also find a solid Tandoori Chicken and Mutton Biryani. For something sweet, the Caramel Custard is the go-to, a simple, classic end to a meal, often paired with a cup of strong Irani Chai. Service is famously brisk; this is a place designed for a quick, satisfying meal, not a long conversation. The constant turnover of tables, from early morning workers to late-night diners, is part of the rhythm of the place. It’s a functional, historic spot that continues to serve the same purpose it has for over a century. Payment is primarily by cash, though you might be able to use UPI if you ask.
