📍 Arya Bhavan icon📍 Arya Bhavan

Directly opposite the Matunga Central Railway Station, Arya Bhavan is the first restaurant from Muthuswamy Caterers, a business that’s been a cornerstone of traditional South Indian food in Mumbai since 1955. The caterers built a reputation as the city’s “Idli King,” and this two-level eatery brings that legacy to a fast-service format in a neighborhood already dense with South Indian options. The space is functional and almost always packed. It’s a tight, lively room where the focus is entirely on the food and quick turnover. The menu goes well beyond the usual udipi staples, showcasing a much wider range of regional dishes. You’ll find an entire section dedicated to idlis – from the flat Thatte Idli to the spiced Kanchipuram version – often served with a dusting of Molaga Podi, a dry lentil and chili powder. Other specialties like Appam with a mild coconut stew, savory Paniyaram dumplings, and a classic Podi Dosa demonstrate the kitchen’s depth. For dessert, the Pineapple Sheera is a local favorite, though it isn’t always available. Service is incredibly efficient, sometimes bordering on brusque, but it’s all part of the rhythm of the place. Food is occasionally served on a banana leaf set on a plate, and a strong filter coffee is the standard way to finish the meal. Be prepared for the logistics: parking nearby is difficult, and reservations are not accepted. On weekends, a wait of 30 minutes or more is standard.
