Salty Lunch Lady's Little Luncheonette

Old-fashioned lunch counter dishing up serious comfort food – think house-roasted turkey sandwiches and elaborate layer cakes. The cozy, tiled space gets crowded; expect long lines on weekends.

Teal paint, tiled floors, and vintage hanging lamps with floral details define Salty Lunch Lady’s Little Luncheonette, a corner spot in Ridgewood that channels a classic, old-fashioned lunch counter. The space is cozy and warm, filled with eclectic furnishings like tables from a now-closed Lower East Side restaurant and chairs sourced from Pennsylvania. A small sandwich window gives you a direct view into the kitchen, where chef Dria Atencio and her team work. The whole operation is self-service – you order at the counter and find a seat where you can, either inside or at one of the few tables on the sidewalk. The menu is a tight list of American comfort food, centered on sandwiches and baked goods that change seasonally. All the proteins are prepared in-house, from the brined and roasted turkey in the Dill Party sandwich to the fillings for other staples like The Chicky and a classic Tuna Melt. There’s also always a vegetarian option, like the Gooey Gratin made with cauliflower, leeks, cheddar, and gruyere. The dessert counter is just as important, stacked high with impressive layer cakes, pies, and cookies. You might find anything from a rich Chocolate Pudding Pie to a seasonal Orange Curd Pie or a multi-layered Cherry Pistachio Cake. This is a popular neighborhood spot, so it’s not unusual to find a long line snaking out the door, particularly on weekends. Plan for a significant wait for food. The desserts are a huge draw and often sell out, so getting there on the earlier side is the best strategy. With its self-service layout and limited seating, the room can feel crowded and a bit chaotic during the main lunch rush.
