La Boîte aux Lettres

Cozy neighborhood bistro serving seasonal French dishes in a small, book-lined room. The pavé de boeuf is a staple, but the "pour les indécis" sampler lets tables share multiple desserts.

I skip the tourist spots and head straight for the boulangerie. My best days start with fresh bread and end on a terrace.

La Boîte aux Lettres translates to "The Mailbox," but the name feels more connected to the books that line the walls of this intimate Montmartre bistro. The space itself is small and cozy, with just a handful of tables arranged closely together. It’s the kind of place where the soundscape is a constant, lively hum of conversation, mixing the voices of neighborhood regulars with international visitors who have been pointed in the right direction. You'll find it on a relatively quiet stretch of rue Lepic, where it serves as a welcome alternative to the more commercialized restaurants common in this part of Paris. Founded over a decade ago by chef Fréderic-Paul Chartier and director Antonin Prion, the entire operation is about providing a genuine neighborhood experience. When the weather is good, the small cluster of outdoor tables on the street are the first to fill up. That focus on authenticity carries straight to the menu, which is built around homemade, seasonal French cuisine. Dishes change based on what’s fresh, but the kitchen maintains a core of bistro classics. The *Pavé de Boeuf*, a perfectly cooked steak often served with a pepper sauce or sauce Albufera, is a fixture. You’ll also usually find a daily risotto and a classic terrine de campagne. For dessert, the kitchen is consistently praised for two dishes in particular – a rich, dense *Pain Perdu* and a straightforward, excellent *Tiramisu*. A distinct part of the experience here is the "Pour les indécis" option on the menu. Translated as "For the undecided," it allows you to order a sampler of multiple starters or desserts on a single plate. It’s a popular choice and a smart way to try a few different things. Given the restaurant’s small size and its loyal local following, making a reservation is almost always necessary, especially for dinner.
