Le Petit Chef - San Francisco

Immersive dinner show projecting a 3D animated story right onto the tablecloth. A tiny virtual chef "cooks" each course before real tasting menu plates land in sync with the visuals.

The chef preparing your meal is six centimeters tall and made entirely of light. Housed within the Hyatt Regency SOMA, this experience operates less like a standard dinner service and more like a synchronized piece of theater where the table surface serves as the stage. Overhead 3D projection mapping aligns perfectly with your place setting, creating the illusion of a miniature animated character battling with ingredients right on your empty plate. The San Francisco engagement features the "Le Petit Chef & Friends" storyline, a projected culinary competition involving animated chefs from France, Spain, Italy, and Japan. The rhythm of the night is strict and shared by the whole room. You are asked to arrive thirty minutes early, and once seated, the dining room moves through the two-hour runtime in unison. The animation plays out a scene – chopping, searing, and plating – and once the digital sequence concludes, servers place the actual physical dish over the projection. The menu is fixed, with options ranging from a "Grand" selection to vegetarian and children’s courses. While the physical food on your fork might vary based on your dietary choice – distinct menus cover everything from Dungeness crab cioppino to beet purée – the visual story projected on the table remains the same for everyone. It is a dark room, necessary for the visuals to register, filled with the sounds of the accompanying musical score. This is a high-concept production designed almost exclusively for birthdays and special occasions, where the novelty of the medium is the main course.
