Minnie Bell’s Soul Movement

Fillmore kitchen serving classic soul food from treasured family recipes. The rosemary fried chicken gets top billing, but the real move is adding hot honey butter to the fresh cornbread.

I have a favorite coffee shop in every neighborhood.

Minnie Bell’s Soul Movement is Fernay McPherson’s homecoming – a permanent spot in the Fillmore District for the soul food she grew up with. After starting as a food truck and building a following at markets, this brick-and-mortar restaurant brings her family’s culinary history right back to the neighborhood where she was raised. The name itself is a tribute to her great-aunt Minnie and grandmother Lillie Bell, whose recipes, carried from Texas during the Great Migration, form the heart of the entire menu. It’s a small space, with jazzy music usually playing and a bar that works well for anyone dining alone. The food is a straightforward and confident take on soul food classics. Everything is built around the rosemary fried chicken, known for its deeply seasoned, crispy breading. You’ll find all the core sides done right – macaroni and cheese, candied yams, collard greens, and potato salad. The cornbread, however, gets special attention and is almost always ordered, especially with a side of the hot honey butter that pairs just as well with the chicken. McPherson has updated some family recipes, like adding jalapeños to the hot water cornbread, but others remain untouched. The caramel cake, for instance, is made from her grandmother Lillie Bell’s exact recipe, while the banana pudding uses a rich, mascarpone-based custard. A small detail to know is that the official website can be out of date, so it's best to rely on more current sources for hours.
