Fred’s Coffee Shop has been a fixture on this stretch of Bridgeway since 1966, back when the road was just two lanes of dirt and this part of Sausalito felt out of town. The place was founded by German immigrant Fred Peters not just as a restaurant, but as a social hub – a role it still fills today for locals and hikers coming down from Mt. Tamalpais. Inside, the small, one-room eatery is defined by its long communal tables. This was a deliberate choice from the beginning, an imported German tradition called “Stammtisch” meant to get strangers sitting and talking with one another. If you’d rather watch the action, you can grab a seat at the counter for a direct view into the open kitchen where the chefs work. The menu is classic American diner fare, with a clear focus on breakfast and brunch served all day. Portions are famously large. The Cornflake French Toast has a unique, crunchy coating, while the thick-cut sweet bacon – often called “Millionaire’s Bacon” – is a house specialty. You’ll also find several variations of Eggs Benedict, including crab and salmon, alongside a wide range of omelettes and specialty pancakes like Swedish or Lemon Ricotta. Even the potatoes get special treatment, with both hash browns and country-fried versions made from a mix of different varieties. The atmosphere is casual, lively, and moderately noisy, a direct result of the shared seating. It gets especially busy on weekends, when a wait for a table is standard. It’s a straightforward, welcoming spot built on hearty food and conversation.
