The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization established on August 12, 1982. For over four decades, MATI works to promote and develop tourism in the Maldives, addressing issues within the country's tourism sector. The association coordinates with government bodies to align new laws, regulations, and guidelines with industry best practices. Representing the Maldivian tourism industry domestically and internationally, MATI participates in seminars, conducts research, and provides professional consultation. Its efforts center on sustainable tourism development, advocacy, human capital development, and the preservation of culture and heritage. The association's mission involves continuous monitoring of the tourism sector, proactively minimizing challenges and maximizing opportunities through engagement. Among its key contributions are advocating for extended resort lease periods, transparent lease rent formulas, and fair investment compensation. MATI lobbied for a Hotel School and played an instrumental role during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiding in the safe reopening of borders and worker vaccination. The association supports human capital development through initiatives such as the Chevening/MATI Scholarships and knowledge-sharing events such as "MATI Insight." Celebrating 50 years of tourism, the association organized the "50 Years of Tourism Awards by MATI" and published two coffee table books on resort architecture and industry history.
